There’s no easier way to tie down a load than by using a set of ratchet straps. Also known as lashing straps, they consist of adjustable straps with a fastening mechanism. You can wrap a set of ratchet straps over the load, after which you can tighten them so that the load doesn’t move. Below are five things to consider when choosing ratchet straps.
#1) Material
You should consider the material from which the ratchet straps are made. Many ratchet straps are made of polyester. They feature a polyester webbing construction that’s strong, durable and water resistant. With these properties, polyester webbing is an excellent choice of material for ratchet straps. You can also find ratchet straps made of nylon webbing, but polyester webbing is the preferred material from which they are made.
#2) One vs Two Piece
While most ratchet straps consist of a single piece, some of them consist of two pieces. Known as two-piece ratchet straps, they serve the same purpose of securing loads as single-piece ratchet straps. Two-piece ratchet straps, however, feature two pieces. Each piece has its own hardware. With two-piece ratchet straps, you’ll have twice the hardware to keep up with. Therefore, you may want to choose single-piece ratchet straps.
#3) Width
How wide are the ratchet straps? Some ratchet straps are 2 inches wide, whereas others are 4 inches wide. 2-inch ratchet straps are smaller and, thus, easier to wrap around loads. 4-inch ratchet straps, on the other hand, are stronger and able to provide a higher level of security for loads.
#4) Length
Don’t forget to consider the length when choosing ratchet straps. Ratchet straps are available in different lengths. While most of them are between 2 and 4 inches wide, you can find them in a variety of lengths. You’ll need to choose ratchet straps that are long enough to secure the load with which you intend to use them.
#5) Working Load Limit
Something else to consider when choosing ratchet straps is the working load limit. Working load limit refers to the maximum amount of weight a ratchet strap – or other types of straps and material handling equipment – can withstand under normal operating conditions. A high working load limit indicates a superior level of strength, thus giving you peace of mind knowing that the ratchet straps won’t fail as long as you stay under the working load limit.
